Chapter 24 - Vivian's Squalor

Across town, far removed from the opulent country clubs and charity galas she had once ruled, Vivian Grant was experiencing her own personal hell. After the forensic accountants had linked her directly to the forged financial documents, her assets had been seized to pay the staggering legal penalties. She had been forced to sell her sprawling, pretentious estate and move into a cramped, two-bedroom apartment in a run-down complex near the industrial district.

The apartment smelled of cheap carpet cleaner and old cooking grease. Vivian sat at a chipped laminate dining table, wearing a faded silk robe that had seen better days. Her perfectly coiffed hair was now unkempt, showing thick streaks of gray at the roots she could no longer afford to dye.

She stared intensely at a corkboard leaning against the peeling wallpaper. Pinned to the board were blurry, secretly printed photographs of my house, printouts of my grandmother's trust structure, and vicious, handwritten notes detailing her paranoid theories.

Vivian had not learned humility; she had only learned hatred. She fundamentally believed that I had orchestrated an elaborate, illegal conspiracy to steal her son’s wealth and destroy her social standing. In her delusional mind, she was the tragic heroine of a story gone terribly wrong.

She picked up a cheap, prepaid burner phone from the table. She had pawned the very last of her diamond tennis bracelets—the ones the courts hadn't found—to scrape together ten thousand dollars in untraceable cash. She dialed a number she had found on the dark web, given to her by a disgraced former lawyer who specialized in the kind of dirty work Naomi Chen would never touch.

"Is this Vance Gable?" Vivian asked, her voice dripping with desperation and venom. "I need you to destroy a woman named Lena. I don't care how you do it. Just find me the leverage to ruin her."
