The family court hearing took place two weeks later. It was a swift, utterly devastating legal procedure.
I sat at the plaintiff's table beside Naomi Chen. Derek was not present in the courtroom; he was attending via a video link from the county jail, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit. He looked hollowed out, staring blankly at the camera feed.
The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for abusers, did not mince words. She reviewed the staggering mountain of evidence: the audio of the threatening phone call, the security footage of the attempted kidnapping at the center, the assault on the psychologist, and the confession regarding the conspiracy with his mother.
"Mr. Grant," the judge said, her voice echoing with absolute, unyielding authority. "You have repeatedly demonstrated a terrifying disregard for the law, for the safety of your child, and for the life of the mother. You have proven yourself to be a profound, irredeemable danger."
The judge struck her gavel against the sounding block with a sharp, final crack.
"I am hereby immediately and permanently revoking all of your parental rights, both legal and physical. You will have absolutely no contact with the minor child, Maya, or her mother, Lena. A permanent, lifetime restraining order is issued effectively immediately. You are entirely erased from their lives."
Derek closed his eyes on the video screen. He didn't argue. He didn't yell. The realization that he had lost everything—his money, his freedom, and his bloodline—had finally crushed the last remaining spark of his arrogance.
