Chapter 19 - The Fall of the Heiress

Alejandro and the armed officers flooded the basement stairs, their heavy flashlights cutting through the darkness caused by the shattered electrical panel.

"Valeria! Drop the weapon!" the lead officer bellowed, his gun drawn and aimed steadily.

Valeria stood in the center of the basement, cornered like a wild animal. The tire iron hung loosely in her hand. She looked at the police, and then she looked at Alejandro, who was staring at her with a level of hatred so profound it seemed to steal the oxygen from the room.

"You did this to me, Alejandro," Valeria cried, tears mixing with the rain on her face. "I loved you! I would have been a perfect wife! But you chose a child and a maid over our empire!"

"You don't know what love is," Alejandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You are just an empty, greedy shell. And your empire is ashes."

Realizing there was no escape, no judge to buy, and no father to bail her out, the fight finally left Valeria. She dropped the tire iron. It clanged loudly against the concrete floor.

Two officers rushed forward, grabbing her arms and forcing her to the ground. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed in the dark basement, a sound of absolute, final justice.

As they dragged the sobbing, broken heiress up the stairs and out into the waiting squad cars, Alejandro rushed to the heavy steel door of the panic room. He pounded on it with his fist.

"Lucía! It's me! Open the door, it's safe!"

The heavy locking wheel spun from the inside. The door pushed open. Lucía stood there, pale and trembling, but holding Sofía safely in her arms.

Alejandro dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of them in a desperate, fierce embrace. He buried his face in Sofía’s hair, crying for the first time since the nightmare began. "I've got you. It's over. I've got you both."
