Chapter 4 - The Nursery in the Dark

|

Midnight brought a fragile, suffocating silence to the mansion. Charlene lay awake, the dull, throbbing pain in her hip a constant reminder of her precarious reality. She was a ghost in her own life, hiding in plain sight while the father of her child plotted a bloody war to secure their future.

A soft knock at her door made her breath catch.

Dominic stepped inside, carrying a small, heavy iron key. He didn't speak. He simply held out his hand to her.

Charlene pushed herself out of the narrow bed, wrapping a thick woolen shawl over her simple cotton nightgown. She placed her hand in his, letting him guide her out of the servant’s quarters and into the dark, silent corridors of the west wing.

They moved like shadows, avoiding the security cameras Dominic had personally programmed to blind spots. He led her to a set of heavy, reinforced double doors at the very end of the hall—a room that had been strictly off-limits to the entire staff since she arrived.

Dominic unlocked the door with the iron key and pushed it open. He reached out and flicked a switch.

Charlene gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth.

It wasn't a storage room. It was a sprawling, meticulously designed nursery. The walls were painted a soft, soothing cream. A handcrafted mahogany crib sat in the center of the room, draped in imported silk linens. A massive, plush rocking chair rested near a window overlooking the private gardens. Shelves lined the walls, filled with antique children's books, silver rattles, and dozens of tiny, perfectly folded outfits.

“Dominic,” she wept softly, overwhelmed by the sheer, staggering beauty of it.

“I built it myself,” Dominic murmured, stepping behind her and wrapping his arms securely around her swollen belly, resting his chin on her shoulder. “Every night when the house was asleep, I came in here. I painted the walls. I assembled the crib. I needed a place where I could believe in our future.”

Tears spilled over her lashes, tracking down her cheeks. “It’s beautiful. It’s perfect.”

“It’s waiting for her,” he promised, his hands gently rubbing the curve of her stomach. “I know it’s hard, Charlene. I know watching me with Bethany is destroying you. But every time you walk past this door, I want you to remember what we are fighting for. You are not a maid. You are the mother of my child, and this is your home.”

She turned in his arms, burying her face in his chest, allowing herself to completely surrender to the illusion of safety, even if just for a few stolen minutes in the dark.
