Chapter 18 - The Open Ending

|

The mansion was quiet by dawn. The guests were gone, the blood on the streets was washed away by the morning rain, and the Hamilton empire was absolutely secure.

Charlene slept peacefully in the massive king-sized bed of the master suite, the baby resting safely in the mahogany crib nearby.

Dominic stood by the window, wearing a fresh white shirt, looking out over the sprawling, frosted grounds of his estate. He had won the war. He had protected his queen. He had secured the future for his heir.

A soft knock echoed on the bedroom door.

Vincent stepped inside, keeping his voice to a low whisper so as not to wake them. He looked exhausted, his suit rumpled, but his eyes carried a dark, serious urgency.

“The Petrovs are eradicated, Boss,” Vincent reported quietly. “The Senator is in federal custody. The city belongs entirely to you.”

“Good,” Dominic murmured, not turning away from the window. “And O'Rourke?”

Vincent hesitated. The silence stretched for a fraction of a second too long.

Dominic slowly turned around, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the tension in his Consigliere’s posture.

“O'Rourke left the city with his men an hour ago,” Vincent said, his voice grim. “But Boss... before he left, his men raided the western armory. They didn't just take the payment for the treaty. They took half our stockpiled munitions.”

Dominic’s blood ran cold.

“O'Rourke betrayed the alliance,” Vincent stated flatly. “He used the chaos of the Petrov assault to steal our weapons. He’s heading back to Boston to arm his own syndicate. He’s planning to march on Chicago while we rebuild.”

Dominic stared at his most trusted friend. The peace they had literally just bled to secure was already fracturing. The Irish had played him.

He looked back at the bed, watching Charlene sleep peacefully, completely unaware that the monsters had simply changed their accents.

Dominic didn't panic. The loving father and devoted husband smoothly retreated into the shadows of his mind, making way for the ruthless king.

“Let him run,” Dominic whispered, a cold, terrifying smile touching his lips. “He thinks he stole a kingdom. He doesn't realize he just woke a dragon.”

He turned back to the window, the dawn light catching the hard, violent lines of his face as he prepared for the next war.
