Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

“Don't touch her.”
The voice didn't boom. It didn't shout. It cut through the ambient noise of the ballroom like a razor-sharp blade across a violin string.
The string quartet abruptly stopped playing. The murmuring crowd went completely, devastatingly silent.
Dominic Hamilton stood at the top of the grand marble staircase.
He didn't look like a venture capitalist anymore. He looked like the apex predator of the Chicago underworld. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on Bethany Garcia with an intensity that promised absolute, immediate slaughter.
He slowly descended the stairs, his footsteps echoing in the breathless room. The sea of billionaires, politicians, and mob bosses parted instantly, terrified to even stand in his shadow.
Bethany froze, her hand still raised in the air. The arrogant flush drained completely from her face as she saw the murderous expression of the man she claimed to love.
“Dominic, darling,” Bethany stammered, frantically trying to recover her composure. “This stupid maid dropped a tray. She’s completely ruining the aesthetic of our party. I was just sending her to the kitchen.”
Dominic didn't look at her. He didn't acknowledge her existence.
He walked past Bethany completely, dropping to one knee on the hard marble floor right in front of Charlene.
The entire ballroom gasped collectively. The untouchable, ruthless billionaire was kneeling in front of a heavily pregnant servant in a stained gray apron.
“Charlene,” Dominic whispered, his voice incredibly soft, entirely stripped of its terrifying edge. He reached out, his massive hands gently framing her pale, tear-streaked face. “Are you okay? Is the baby okay?”
“Dominic,” Charlene sobbed quietly, clutching his forearms, the pain in her back flaring aggressively. “It hurts.”
Dominic stood up, gently wrapping his arm securely around her waist, supporting her entirely against his solid frame. He turned his dark, lethal gaze back to the crowd.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Senator Garcia roared, stepping out from the crowd, his face purple with indignant rage. “Dominic, unhand that servant immediately! You are humiliating my daughter!”

Dominic looked at the corrupt politician, a dark, chilling smile spreading across his face.
“I am not holding a servant, Senator,” Dominic announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent ballroom.
