Chapter 9: The Verdict of Truth

Chapter 9: The Verdict of Truth
The prosecution called their star witnesses.
Ana Morales took the stand, her voice trembling but resolute as she described hearing the muffled cries through the walls and being forced to clean up the crime scene.
Then came Mrs. Donnelly, the next-door neighbor.
"I hadn't seen Evelyn in the yard for months," the elderly neighbor testified, her voice filled with guilt. "Whenever I asked Vanessa about her, she told me Evelyn was bedridden and didn't want visitors. But a week before Sergeant Hale returned, I heard a terrible weeping coming from the kitchen window. I should have called the police then. I will regret that for the rest of my life."
Finally, Marcus took the stand. He didn't raise his voice. He spoke with the quiet, devastating authority of a soldier who had faced death, but found his greatest enemy at his own dinner table.
"I trusted her with the two most precious things in my life: my country’s security and my mother's safety," Marcus told the court, his gaze locking onto Vanessa. "She used my absence as a weapon to torture a defenseless seventy-year-old woman. I ask for justice, not just for my mother, but to ensure this monster can never do this to another human being."
Vanessa didn't look at him. She stared down at the defense table, her hands trembling as the jury walked out to deliberate.
It took them less than four hours to reach a decision.
