Six months after the trial, the air in a small, quiet coastal town in North Carolina felt entirely different.
Marcus had legally divorced Vanessa, severed every tie to his past life, and sold the suburban house of horrors. With the proceeds, he bought a charming, sun-drenched cottage with massive windows and a sprawling garden on the ground floor.
In the backyard, the morning sun illuminated a beautiful patch of bright yellow sunflowers.
Evelyn sat on the porch in a comfortable rocking chair, sipping a warm cup of chamomile tea. Her dental implants were complete, her cheeks had regained their healthy, rosy color, and her laughter had finally returned. The nightmares still came occasionally, but now, she always woke up to the sun streaming through her unlocked bedroom doors.
The gate clicked open, and Ana Morales walked up the path, carrying a folder of medical study guides. After the trial, Marcus had used his savings to sponsor Ana’s tuition for a certified nursing assistant program, a thank-you for her bravery in saving his mother's life.
"Good morning, Mrs. Evelyn! Look at those tomatoes, they’re huge!" Ana smiled, waving.
"All thanks to the sunshine, dear," Evelyn smiled back, her voice strong and full of life.
