Chapter 2: The Red Dress and Broken Pearls

The kitchen door was slightly ajar. Marcus slammed it open, his breath catching in his throat as the scene inside froze his blood.

His elderly mother, Evelyn Hale, was pinned to the cold tile floor. Her floral housedress was torn and stained with fresh crimson. She was feebly clawing at the kitchen counter, her fragile body trembling violently. Scattered across the floor next to her head were three broken teeth, gleaming like gruesome white pebbles in the midday light.

Standing directly over her was Vanessa. She wore a vibrant red dress, now wrinkled and disheveled. Her fist was clenched tight behind her back, and her face was flushed a deep, manic crimson with pure rage.

For one horrific, agonizing second, nobody moved. The ticking of the kitchen clock sounded like a countdown to doom.

Then, the spell broke.

"Mom!" Marcus roared, his voice cracking with panic and fury.

Vanessa whipped around. The rage on her face dissolved into sheer panic so quickly it was dizzying. She dropped her fists, pressing her trembling palms against her chest, her breathing shallow.

"Marcus! Oh my God, thank God you're home!" Vanessa cried, her voice instantly adopting a frantic, victimized pitch. "Your mother... she fell. She went crazy and attacked me when I tried to help her up!"

Marcus didn't even look at his wife. He dropped to his knees, his heavy frame collapsing beside Evelyn. The left side of his mother's face was swelling rapidly, turning an ugly shade of purple.

"Mom, look at me. I'm here. It's Marcus," he whispered, his hands shaking as he gently cradled her frail shoulder.

Evelyn's eyes fluttered open, filled with tears and a profound, agonizing relief. When she spoke, blood bubbled at the corner of her lips.

"You're... you're home," she wheezed. "He's finally home..."
