Chapter 1: The Unexpected Return

The gravel crunched beneath the tires of the taxi, a sound Sergeant Marcus Hale had dreamed of for ten grueling months. Stepping out into the humid North Carolina air, he adjusted his duffel bag over his shoulder. He was two months early—a surprise deployment cut short, a gift he couldn't wait to give his family.

Walking up the paved walkway of his suburban home, Marcus pictured the scene. His beautiful wife, Vanessa, would gasp and throw her arms around his neck. His seventy-year-old mother, Evelyn, who had moved in with them before he deployed, would cry tears of joy and immediately start cooking his favorite meal.

He quietly unlocked the front door, stepping into the cool, air-conditioned foyer.

“Vanessa? Mom? I’m home,” he murmured, keeping his voice low to maximize the surprise.

The house was eerily quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator. But as Marcus took a step toward the hallway, a sound shattered the silence.

It was a sharp, guttural scream.

It didn't sound like joy. It sounded like pure, unadulterated terror.

And it came directly from the kitchen.

Marcus dropped his duffel bag to the floor with a heavy thud. His military instinct, honed by years of active duty, took over instantly. His heart hammered against his ribs as his boots sprinted across the hardwood floor, moving with the terrifying speed of a soldier charging under mortar fire.
