Chapter 8: The Tears of a Manipulator

Chapter 8: The Tears of a Manipulator
Three months later, the North Carolina county courthouse was packed. Vanessa Hale sat at the defense table, wearing a soft, pastel-gray sweater, her hair pulled back into a modest bun. She looked small, fragile, and deeply sorrowful.
When she took the stand in her own defense, the tears flowed perfectly on cue.
"I was completely overwhelmed," Vanessa sobbed into a tissue, looking directly at the jury. "My husband was deployed, facing danger every day. The stress was crushing. And Evelyn... she was hostile from the moment she moved in. She demanded constantly, she provoked me, she threw things. I snapped under the pressure of being a lonely military wife. I never meant to hurt her."
Marcus sat in the front row of the gallery, his uniform pressed perfectly, his face an unreadable mask of stone. He watched the jury, wondering if they would buy the performance that had deceived him for nearly a year.
But the prosecution was prepared.
The district attorney walked up to the podium, holding a stack of glossy photographs. One by one, they were projected onto the large screens in the courtroom.
Images of the windowless storage room with the lock on the outside.
The forensic medical reports detailing the varied ages of the bruises, proving a months-long timeline of abuse.
