Chapter 6 - The Safe and the Signature

"Don't worry about the prenup," Claudia hissed into the phone, her eyes scanning the legal jargon on the papers. "I've already had my lawyers review the loopholes. The power of attorney supersedes the prenuptial restrictions if it's signed post-marriage. It grants me full executive control over his personal and corporate assets in the event of his 'incapacitation' or by proxy."

She placed the documents flat on Adrian’s mahogany desk, running a perfectly manicured fingernail along the signature line.

"He's blinded by his own romantic delusions. He wants to prove to the board that we are a unified front. He's going to hand me the keys to the kingdom willingly." Claudia paused, listening to the person on the other end of the line. "No, the staff suspects nothing. They think I'm upstairs fixing my makeup. I have maybe ten minutes before the wedding planner starts panicking. I'll secure the documents in my overnight bag and meet him at the altar."

Leo watched as she carefully folded the documents, slipping them into a slim, discreet leather portfolio she had brought with her. She closed the wall safe, spun the dial to lock it, and swung the heavy oil painting back into place, concealing the evidence of her intrusion.

The ten-year-old boy stared at his phone screen. The red recording timer was ticking past the two-minute mark. He had captured the entire confession. He had undeniable proof that the beautiful bride was actually a monster trying to destroy the nice man who had greeted him earlier that day.

I have to tell someone, Leo thought frantically. I have to tell Mr. Vance before the wedding starts.

He tapped the screen to stop the recording and carefully slipped the phone back into his jacket pocket. He took a slow, agonizing step backward, preparing to turn and run back to the ballroom as fast as his legs could carry him.
