Chapter 16 - The Shattered Barrier

Adrian didn't move. He stood his ground, his towering frame completely blocking Claudia from reaching the glass door. His sharp, analytical mind was already connecting the terrifying dots. Why was his bride, moments away from walking down the aisle, holding the master key to a restricted room where a child was locked away?

Before Claudia could offer another fabricated excuse, Leo saw Adrian standing outside the door. The boy’s eyes widened with hope and desperate urgency.

Leo pressed his face against the glass and screamed with every ounce of air left in his lungs. The soundproofing muffled the volume, but the words were unmistakably clear through the glass.

"SHE DID IT! SHE LOCKED ME IN HERE!"

Adrian froze, paralyzed by the sheer weight of the accusation. He turned his head slowly, looking down at the woman he was about to marry.

Claudia tried to force a sweet, reassuring smile, but it looked grotesque, a trembling mask of deceit. "Adrian, please. He's just a boy. He's... confused. He probably locked himself in by accident and is scared."

But Adrian didn't look at her smile. He looked at her eyes. He saw the cold, unadulterated fear lurking behind her perfectly applied makeup. He saw the truth she was desperately trying to hide.

Without thinking, without saying a single word, Adrian took two deliberate steps backward. He ignored the golden key in Claudia's trembling hand. He raised his leg and delivered a massive, devastating front kick directly to the center of the heavy glass door.

The impact was thunderous. The acoustic glass, designed to withstand sound but not a direct, concentrated physical assault from a fully grown man, buckled. With a deafening crash, the door shattered into a thousand glittering pieces, raining down onto the hallway floor like a cascade of broken diamonds.
