Chapter 20 - The Greatest Gift
Minutes later, the grand doors of the ballroom swung open, but it was not the bridal procession the guests were expecting. Adrian Vance walked to the front of the altar alone, his expression a mask of stony resolve.
He took the microphone from the bewildered officiant. "Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian announced, his voice echoing through the silent, shocked hall. "I apologize for the inconvenience, but there will be no wedding today. The ceremony is permanently canceled. I ask that you please exit the manor quietly."
The guests were stunned into absolute silence. Without a word of protest, recognizing the terrifying finality in Adrian’s eyes, they began to file out of the ballroom, leaving the towering floral arrangements and the uneaten champagne behind.
An hour later, the manor was empty, save for the staff. Adrian walked slowly into his private study. Leo was sitting on the leather sofa, drinking a glass of water, his mother sitting beside him, holding his hand tightly.
Adrian walked over and knelt down on one knee so he was eye-level with the ten-year-old boy.
"I wanted to thank you, Leo," Adrian said softly, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "You saved my life today."
Leo smiled shyly, wiping a remaining tear from his cheek. He looked at the billionaire and shrugged his small shoulders.
"My father used to say that the truth is always terrifying," Leo said quietly. "But hiding it brings something much worse."
