Chapter 2 - The Perfect Illusion

In the lavish bridal suite on the second floor of Valmont Manor, Claudia stood before a towering, gilded antique mirror. She was a vision of absolute, breathtaking perfection. Her wedding gown was a masterpiece of intricate French lace and thousands of hand-sewn pearls that caught the light with her every movement. A team of makeup artists and hairstylists had spent the last three hours ensuring that not a single strand of hair or brushstroke of contour was out of place. She looked exactly like a woman deeply, profoundly in love, ready to step into a fairy-tale future.
"You look absolutely flawless, Miss Claudia," the head stylist gushed, taking a step back to admire her work. "Mr. Vance is going to lose his breath when he sees you walking down that aisle."
"Thank you, Julia," Claudia replied, her voice soft and melodious. She offered a practiced, demure smile, the kind she had perfected over years of social climbing. "I just want everything to be perfect for Adrian. He deserves nothing less."

But as the stylists packed up their extensive kits and left the room to give the bride a moment of peace, Claudia’s sweet, angelic smile instantly vanished. Her expression hardened into a mask of cold, calculating ambition. She walked over to the heavy oak desk in the corner of the suite, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
She wasn't thinking about the vows she was about to take, nor was she thinking about building a life with the man waiting for her downstairs. Her mind was entirely consumed by a stack of legal documents currently resting inside a hidden safe in Adrian’s private study. The power of attorney papers. Once the wedding concluded and the ink on their marriage certificate was dry, she would have the leverage she needed. She had played the long, grueling game of the devoted fiancée for two years. She had memorized his likes and dislikes, mirrored his values, and carefully isolated him from anyone who might question her motives. The finish line was merely hours away. All she had to do was secure the final documents, and the Vance empire would effectively be hers to dismantle.
