Chapter 7 - The Midnight Meeting

“I found something,” Emma whispered into the phone, terrified that someone in the adjacent servant rooms might hear her. “In Silas Vance’s office.”
“Bring it to my study. Now,” Victor ordered.
The line went dead.
Emma carefully taped the assembled shreds of paper onto a piece of cardboard, slipped it under her sweater, and crept out of her room. The manor was silent, plunged into the deep, heavy darkness of 2:00 AM.
She navigated the servant corridors by memory, avoiding the creaky floorboards, until she reached the heavy oak doors of Victor’s private study in the west wing.
She didn't need to knock. The door clicked open, revealing Marco standing in the shadows with a suppressed pistol in his hand. He lowered the weapon when he saw her, stepping aside to let her in.
Victor was sitting behind his massive desk, bathed in the soft, golden light of a single desk lamp.
“Show me,” Victor said, his voice a low rumble.
Emma approached the desk and laid the cardboard down.
Victor and Marco both leaned over, reading the fragmented words written in blue ink.
“Falcone,” Marco growled, his hands balling into fists. “Silas is washing our money and sending it to the enemy.”
“Silas is a coward,” Victor mused, his silver eyes cold and calculating. “He wouldn’t have the spine to orchestrate embezzlement of this scale on his own. Someone inside the family is forcing him to do it. Someone who uses a fountain pen with midnight blue ink.”
Victor looked up at Emma. For the first time, the terrifying mafia boss looked at her with genuine, profound respect.
“You did exactly what I asked, Emma. You found a thread.”
“What happens now?” Emma asked, shivering slightly in the cool air of the study.
“Now, I pull the thread,” Victor said softly, closing his hand into a fist over the desk. “And we see who unravels.”
Victor stood up, walking around the desk. He stopped right in front of Emma.
“You have proven your loyalty tonight. But you have also put yourself in extreme danger. Silas knows you were in his office. If he realizes the shreds are missing, he will come for you.”
May you like
“I can take care of myself,” Emma said, lifting her chin.
Victor smiled, a dark, dangerous expression. “I know you can. But you belong to me now, Emma. And I protect what is mine.”
