Chapter 12 - The Shift

|

With Harold locked in the basement and Silas already being interrogated, the power dynamic within Blackwood Manor shifted dramatically.

Victor could trust no one in his inner circle except Marco. And, inexplicably, Emma.

“The gala proceeds as planned,” Victor announced, pouring a glass of scotch for Marco, and surprisingly, offering one to Emma.

Emma took the crystal glass, her hands shaking slightly.

“Are you insane?” Marco argued. “Julian is bringing Falcone hitmen into the house! We should cancel the event and execute Julian right now.”

“If we kill Julian now, without public proof of his treason, the other families will see it as paranoia,” Victor explained coldly. “They will think I am executing my own bloodline to consolidate power. It will start a syndicate war. No, we let Julian spring his trap. We catch the Falcone hitmen red-handed, and we eliminate them all legally under syndicate rules.”

“It’s too dangerous, Victor. There will be civilians everywhere.”

“Which is why I need eyes everywhere,” Victor said. He turned to Emma. “Julian doesn't know Harold has been caught. He still thinks the dead drop is secure. I need you to take Harold’s place as head of the dining room staff for the gala.”

Emma choked on her scotch. “Me? Mr. Blackwood, I’m a maid. I don't know how to run a gala of this size!”

“You don't need to run it,” Victor said, stepping around the desk and standing right in front of her. “You just need to watch Julian. You will serve his table. You will listen to every whisper. You are the only person in this house he completely underestimates.”

Victor reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind Emma’s ear. The touch was intimate, electric, and completely unexpected.

“You are my secret weapon, Emma,” Victor murmured, his silver eyes locking onto hers. “Will you stand with me?”

Emma looked up at the ruthless, terrifying man who was suddenly looking at her with absolute trust. She felt a fierce, burning loyalty ignite in her chest.

“I’ll stand with you,” she promised.

Victor smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression that made her breath catch. “Good. Now, let’s prepare for a war.”
