Chapter 3 - The New Assignment

Victor walked slowly around the massive oak table, his footsteps making no sound on the thick rug. He stopped directly in front of Emma, towering over her.
“I need to find a rat in my house, Emma,” Victor said, his voice barely above a whisper. “And my security team is too obvious. The moment Marco starts interrogating the staff, the mole will go underground. They will destroy any evidence.”
“You want me to look for them?” Emma asked, her heart hammering wildly in her chest.
“I want you to do exactly what you do best,” Victor replied. “I want you to be invisible. You will continue your duties as a housekeeper. You will clean the rooms, polish the silver, and serve the meals. But you will keep your eyes and ears open.”
Harold gasped, stepping forward. “Sir! With all due respect, she is a civilian. A new hire! You cannot involve her in syndicate business.”
Victor didn’t even look at the butler. “Harold, your failure to secure this room is the only reason we are having this conversation. Do not test my patience today.”
Harold immediately stepped back, bowing his head in submission.
Victor looked back at Emma. “If you notice a desk drawer left slightly open. If you see a servant lingering too long near my study. If you hear a whispered phone call in the laundry room. You report it directly to Marco. Understood?”
“Mr. Blackwood, I just wanted to clean the dining room,” Emma said, her voice trembling slightly. “I don’t want to get involved in... whatever this is.”
“You are already involved,” Marco chimed in from the corner, tossing the dead bug in his hand. “You found the device. If the mole saw you do it, you’re a liability to them.”
Emma’s breath hitched. She hadn't thought of that. She was just a woman trying to pay off her mother’s medical debts. Now she was a target in a mafia war.
“I will protect you,” Victor stated, the absolute certainty in his voice washing over her like a heavy blanket. “You have my word on that. But I need your eyes, Emma. Will you help me?”

Emma looked at the cold, ruthless boss of the Blackwood family. She had no real choice.
“Yes, sir,” she said. “I’ll do it.”
