Chapter 5 - The Shredded Clue

|

The east wing of Blackwood Manor was a labyrinth of heavy oak doors and thick carpets that swallowed the sound of footsteps. This was the financial heart of Victor’s empire, where ledgers were balanced and millions of dollars of illicit funds were washed clean.

Emma wheeled her cleaning cart down the hallway, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She was assigned to clean the office of Silas Vance, Victor’s chief financial officer. Silas was a gaunt, nervous man who always smelled of stale coffee and expensive aftershave.

She knocked softly. When there was no answer, she used her master key to unlock the door.

The office was meticulously organized, almost obsessively so. Emma went to work, dusting the bookshelves and emptying the wastebaskets. She moved methodically, keeping her eyes scanning for anything that felt out of place.

As she reached beneath the heavy mahogany desk to empty the primary trash can, she noticed the paper shredder.

It was a heavy-duty industrial model, designed to turn documents into fine, unreadable confetti. But the catch bin hadn’t been fully secured. A small handful of shredded paper strips had spilled out onto the dark carpet.

Normally, Emma would just vacuum them up. But her new assignment made her pause.

She knelt under the desk, picking up one of the long, thin strips of paper.

It wasn't a standard financial ledger. The paper was unusually thick, textured like high-grade stationary. And the ink wasn't black printer toner. It was dark, unmistakable blue fountain pen ink.

Silas didn't use fountain pens. He used cheap, black ballpoint pens. Emma knew this because she cleaned up his discarded pens every week.

Someone else had been in this office. Someone who wrote handwritten notes on expensive paper and needed them destroyed immediately.

Emma quickly glanced at the door to make sure it was locked. Then, she pulled a small plastic sandwich bag from her apron pocket—intended for her lunch—and carefully scooped up every single strip of the blue-inked shredded paper from the floor.

She hid the bag deep in her cart just as the doorknob began to rattle.

“Who is in here?!” Silas’s voice barked from the hallway.
