Chapter 4 - The Promotion

|

The following morning, a notice was posted on the staff bulletin board in the kitchen corridor.

Emma Lawson was officially promoted to Head of Guest Services.

The title was entirely fabricated, a cover designed by Victor and Marco to give Emma unrestricted access to every wing of the sprawling manor without raising suspicion among the other servants.

When Emma walked into the staff dining hall for breakfast, the room fell silent.

Dozens of maids, footmen, and cooks turned to stare at her. Whispers broke out like a sudden rustle of dry leaves.

“Did you hear?” a young maid named Sarah whispered to another girl. “She got promoted after only three weeks.”

“I heard Harold slapped her, and Mr. Blackwood fired him,” someone else muttered.

Harold hadn’t been fired, but his authority had been severely kneecapped. He stood near the coffee urn, glaring at Emma with absolute venom. His pride had been wounded, and in the Blackwood household, pride was a dangerous thing to lose.

Emma kept her head down, grabbing a piece of toast and a cup of black coffee. She sat at a small table in the corner, trying to make herself as small as possible.

“Don’t let them get to you,” a deep voice said.

Emma looked up. Marco was standing by her table, holding a mug of espresso. He wasn't wearing his usual tactical jacket, opting for a simple black sweater, but he still looked like a coiled spring.

“They think I slept my way into the promotion,” Emma murmured, feeling her cheeks burn.

“Let them think whatever they want,” Marco said, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. “It makes your cover stronger. If they think you’re just the boss’s new favorite toy, they won’t suspect you’re actually a spy.”

“That doesn’t make me feel much better,” Emma sighed.

Marco slid a small, black encrypted cell phone across the table, covering it with a napkin.

“Keep this on you at all times,” Marco instructed softly. “Speed dial one goes directly to me. Speed dial two goes to Victor. If you see anything out of place today in the east wing, you call.”

May you like

Emma palmed the phone, slipping it into the deep pocket of her apron. “What’s in the east wing?”

“The accountants,” Marco said darkly.
