Chapter 8 - The Unspoken Debts

|

The tension in the ballroom was thick enough to suffocate. Nobody moved. Nobody drank. Hundreds of high-society figures sat frozen, realizing they were witnessing a public execution of executive ego.

“For years,” Elowen said into the microphone, her calm demeanor remaining unshakable, “I believed that loyalty meant quietly protecting the people you love from the natural consequences of their incompetence. I was wrong.”

Weston shook his head slightly, his eyes pleading, silently begging her to stop. Please, Elowen. Don't do this here.

Elowen ignored his silent plea completely.

“Over the last eight years, Prescott Urban Development faced three catastrophic financial collapses,” Elowen announced to the room.

Gasps echoed through the audience.

Vanessa’s face turned bright red as several journalists at nearby tables immediately began scribbling furiously in their notebooks.

“No...” Weston whispered, gripping his glass so hard the crystal groaned under the pressure. “No, she wouldn't...”

“The first near-collapse occurred six years ago,” Elowen continued smoothly. “A critical miscalculation in cash flow almost forced the company into liquidation. An emergency cash injection of $4.8 million miraculously arrived to save thirty-seven jobs.”

She paused, letting the words sink in.

“The second occurred four years ago. A $9.2 million bridge loan secretly covered a massive operational deficit,” she said, her voice echoing clearly. “And the third, during the recent market downturn, was a $17 million rescue package that prevented bank foreclosure.”

Weston’s head was spinning. The numbers. Those were the exact figures of his "mysterious offshore investors."

“Weston...” Vanessa whispered, her voice laced with sudden horror as she pulled her chair a few inches away from him. “Is she talking about... your company’s private funding?”

“The founder of Prescott Urban Development believed those funds came from impressed corporate angels who recognized his genius,” Elowen said, a subtle, devastating smile appearing on her lips. “He was wrong. Those funds came from the Rowan Heritage Trust.”

She leaned slightly closer to the microphone.

“They came from me.”

A massive wave of murmurs and outright shock swept across the six hundred guests.

“She funded him!” a prominent tech investor exclaimed softly. “She literally built his entire company while he took the credit!”

Claudia looked like she was about to faint, her hand trembling violently against her chest. “This can't be happening... this is a nightmare...”

Elowen looked straight down at the man who had told her three hours ago that she wasn't polished enough for his world.

“You once asked me why those investors believed in you, Weston,” Elowen said softly, her voice carrying a heartbreaking weight. “They didn't. I believed in you. I believed in the young man who used to drive a broken pickup truck and buy me grocery-store flowers because he couldn't afford roses. I believed in the man who promised we would build a future together.”

She took a slow, deep breath, letting the past burn away.

“Somewhere between the first million and your first magazine cover, you forgot who 'together' meant.”
