Chapter 5 - The VIP Table

|

Two hours later, the Grand Aurelia Ballroom was buzzing with the electric hum of pure wealth and political influence.

Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over hundreds of elite guests—billionaire venture capitalists, real estate tycoons, politicians, and high-society journalists.

At the center of the room, positioned directly in front of the main stage, was Table One—the VIP circle.

Weston Prescott sat at the head of the table, sitting tall and exuding the supreme confidence of a man who believed he was about to conquer the world. Vanessa Cole sat to his right, radiant in her silver dress, whispering charm into the ears of every passing executive. Claudia sat to his left, sipping vintage champagne and looking around the room as if she already owned it.

“Look at them watching us, Weston,” Claudia whispered, leaning in with a smug grin. “Your father would have given anything to see you at this table.”

“This is just the beginning, Mother,” Weston said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his bourbon. “Once Meridian signs the $120 million commitment tonight, Prescott Urban Development becomes untouchable in this city.”

Vanessa smiled, placing a manicured hand over his forearm. “The media coverage is already set, Weston. I spoke with the press team. As soon as the Chairwoman’s representative makes the announcement, our press release goes live globally.”

“Have you seen the Chairwoman yet?” Claudia asked, scanning the room curiously. “The elusive Evelyn Rowan’s granddaughter? I heard she controls over three billion in private equity, yet no one in Boston has ever seen her face.”

“She keeps a tight circle,” Weston replied knowingly, expanding his chest. “Very exclusive. Very calculated. People like that don't mix with everyday crowds. But tonight, she’ll see what Prescott Urban can do. Vanessa made sure our proposal was flawless.”

“She’ll be impressed, Weston,” Vanessa purred. “You have the vision. You have the polish.”

At the front of the ballroom, feedback hummed softly from the speakers as Adrian Vale, the distinguished, gray-haired Managing Director of Meridian Capital, stepped up to the podium.

The chatter across the grand hall slowly died down. Hundreds of eyes turned toward the stage.

Weston straightened his posture, adjusting his cuff links, his heart pounding with victorious anticipation. He caught the eye of a rival developer two tables away and gave a subtle, triumphant nod.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian Vale’s authoritative voice boomed through the speakers. “Welcome to the annual Meridian Heritage Gala. Tonight, we gather not just to celebrate financial capital, but the visionary leadership that drives our city forward.”

Applause echoed across the ballroom. Weston leaned back, resting his arm over the back of his chair.

“Tonight,” Adrian continued, “Meridian Heritage Capital is prepared to announce our largest strategic investment of the decade—a $120 million allocation designated for transformative urban expansion.”

Vanessa squeezed Weston’s hand under the table. “This is it,” she whispered excitedly.

“However,” Adrian said, pausing as he looked across the crowd, his eyes lingering briefly on Table One. “Before we officially read the terms of the investment, our Chairwoman has requested the rare privilege of addressing this room in person.”

A sudden whisper surged through the ballroom like a wave.

Weston frowned, glancing at Vanessa. “In person? I thought she never made public appearances.”

“Many of you know her only by her family name and her executive decisions,” Adrian spoke into the microphone, stepping back slightly. “Tonight, Chairwoman Rowan steps into the light.”

The main lights overhead abruptly dimmed, casting the vast ballroom into soft shadows.

A single, brilliant white spotlight cut through the dark, illuminating the top of the grand double staircase at the far end of the hall.

The massive brass doors at the top of the stairs creaked open.
