Chapter 7 - Unmasking the Chairwoman

|

The sound of her voice—calm, resonant, and entirely lacking the hesitation she usually showed around him—sent a violent chill straight down Weston’s spine.

“Most of you in this room know my family through the Rowan Heritage Trust, founded by my late grandmother, Evelyn Rowan, forty-one years ago,” Elowen continued, standing center stage under the bright spotlights. “Today, as sole trustee, I hold the controlling voting position in Meridian Heritage Capital.”

Whispers erupted across the ballroom like wildfire.

“Rowan? She’s the Rowan heiress?” an influential banker at the neighboring table muttered loudly. “I thought she was just Prescott’s quiet wife!”

“Wait, Prescott’s company is being funded by his own wife’s trust?” another voice chimed in.

At Table One, Claudia was gripping the edge of the linen tablecloth so tightly her knuckles turned ghostly white. “Weston...” she hissed frantically under her breath. “What is she doing up there? Did you know about this? Weston!”

Weston couldn't answer. His lips were dry, his mouth feeling as if it were filled with sand. He stared at his wife, his mind racing, trying to find a way to escape the nightmare unfolding in front of the entire business elite of Boston.

Onstage, Elowen raised a graceful hand, and the room instantly fell silent once again.

“Tonight’s proposed $120 million capital allocation has been under extensive review by our board for eighteen months,” Elowen said softly, her eyes resting firmly on Weston’s pale face. “The target recipient, as many of you know, is Prescott Urban Development.”

Weston felt a sudden, desperate surge of hope rise in his chest.

She’s revealing herself to give me the money, he thought wildly. It’s a surprise. She’s doing this to elevate us both!

He began to push his chair back, preparing to stand up and smile for the press photographers.

“Elowen—” Weston began, his voice raspy as he made a slight motion to stand.

Adrian Vale immediately stepped forward from the side of the stage, raising a sharp hand toward Table One. “Mr. Prescott, please remain seated while the Chairwoman speaks.”

Several security guards positioned around the VIP table took a step forward, their eyes locking onto Weston.

Weston slowly sank back into his chair, humiliated, as low chuckles rippled through the surrounding tables.

Elowen didn't miss a beat.

“Prescott Urban Development has undeniable potential,” Elowen continued smoothly into the microphone. “They have talented architects. Dedicated on-site construction workers. Strong mid-level management. Good, hard-working people.”

Weston breathed a slight sigh of relief, though his hands were still trembling uncontrollably.

“However,” Elowen’s voice dropped an octave, turning sharp enough to slice glass. “Capital without character is merely a tool for destruction.”

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

“Numbers tell us whether a company can survive,” Elowen said, looking directly into Weston’s soul. “Leadership tells us whether it deserves to grow.”
