Chapter 7 - Ruth’s Call

The marble floor was cold beneath Emily’s knees.
Vanessa placed one foot in the basin and laughed as photographers lifted their cameras.
“Careful,” she said. “Don’t spill on the dress.”
Preston watched from the side.
“My wife needs to learn respect.”
The words confirmed everything Emily needed.
A company founder humiliating his pregnant wife would create outrage.
A company founder doing it while relying on her assets would create panic.
A company founder doing it hours before evidence of fraud became public would have no allies left by morning.
Emily washed Vanessa’s foot once.
Then her phone vibrated.
Ruth had completed the transfers.
Hartwell Holdings now legally controlled the loans, land, facilities, and voting shares connected to Vance Global.
Emily stopped.
Vanessa ordered her to continue.
Emily slowly stood.
“Ruth just confirmed it.”
The ballroom fell silent as the attorneys entered.
Preston denied every statement Ruth made. He called the documents false and demanded security remove her.
The head of security did not move.
He had been employed by Hartwell Holdings for twelve years.
Ruth opened the first document.
“Hawthorne Manor is held by the Hartwell Heritage Trust. Emily Hartwell Vance is the sole controlling beneficiary.”
She opened the second.
“Vance Global headquarters stands on property leased from Hartwell Commercial Land. That lease contains a fraud termination clause.”
The third document concerned the loans.
The fourth concerned voting shares.
By the fifth, Preston had stopped interrupting.
Vanessa gripped the back of her chair.
“This doesn’t change anything,” she said. “Preston built the company.”
Ruth turned toward her.
“Your consulting companies received eleven million dollars from Vance Global during the last eighteen months. Investigators found no employees, operating offices, or completed projects connected to those payments.”
The crowd reacted immediately.
Vanessa looked at Preston.
“You said those accounts were protected.”
Her mistake echoed through the ballroom.
Preston’s head snapped toward her.
“Be quiet.”
Emily watched the alliance between them fracture in a single sentence.
One of the board members stepped forward.
“Preston, is any of this true?”
Preston straightened his jacket.
“This is a personal dispute being manipulated by a grieving woman.”
Emily expected the accusation.
She removed a small recorder from her pocket.
During the previous week, Preston had repeatedly demanded that she sign estate documents. He had admitted the company needed Hartwell guarantees to survive. He had also threatened to declare her mentally unfit if she resisted.
Emily pressed a button.
Preston’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.
Once I control the estate, it won’t matter what Emily wants. She’ll have the baby, stay at home, and sign whatever I put in front of her.
Several guests stepped away from him.
The board member’s face hardened.
“You told us the company had independent financing.”
Preston’s composure finally broke.
“You think any of you would be here without me?”
“No,” Emily said. “They are here because my father’s companies protected your failures.”
Preston moved toward her, but three security officers stepped between them.
He stared over their shoulders.
“You’re my wife.”
“Not for much longer.”
“You’ll destroy everything.”
“I’m saving what can be saved.”
Ruth handed copies of the restructuring agreement to the board members.
“Hartwell Holdings is prepared to protect employee salaries, pensions, and legitimate creditors. The offer requires Preston Vance’s immediate removal as chief executive.”

The decision took less than five minutes.
Every board member voted against him.
