Chapter 6 - The Trap at Hawthorne Manor

By sunset, Hawthorne Manor had become a palace of glass, music, and carefully staged confidence.

Luxury cars lined the drive. Reporters gathered beneath the stone entrance. Inside, servers carried silver trays between guests dressed in gowns and tuxedos.

Preston greeted investors beneath a banner celebrating the future of Vance Global.

Emily watched from the top of the staircase.

She wore a simple white dress and her mother’s necklace. The choice offended Vanessa, who had prepared an elaborate gold gown for her.

“You look like you’re attending a garden lunch,” Vanessa said.

“I’m comfortable.”

“You’re representing a global company.”

“No. Preston is representing it.”

Vanessa smiled. “At least you understand your role.”

Emily rested a hand on her stomach.

“My role is becoming very clear.”

Throughout the evening, Preston announced new developments that did not exist. He promised expansion into Europe and described revenues investigators had already proven false.

The guests applauded.

Emily moved quietly through the room, noting every board member who praised him and every executive who avoided her eyes.

Shortly before dinner, Ruth sent a message.

Final signatures secured. Awaiting your signal.

Emily slipped the phone back into her pocket.

The plan was simple. Once Preston publicly confirmed his dependence on Hartwell support, Ruth would activate the transfer agreements and suspend the guarantees.

But Preston was becoming suspicious.

He noticed Emily speaking privately with an investor who had once worked for her father. He saw Martha carrying files toward the east office.

He pulled Emily into an empty corridor.

“What are you doing?”

“Attending your gala.”

“You’ve been whispering to people all night.”

“They asked how I was feeling.”

“I want your phone.”

“No.”

Preston stared at her.

“You have never refused me this many times in your entire life.”

“Then perhaps you should have noticed sooner.”

His hand tightened at his side.

Before he could answer, Vanessa entered the corridor.

“The board members are asking about the Hartwell estate,” she said. “We need Emily to make a statement.”

Preston’s anger shifted into calculation.

“Yes,” he said. “She should demonstrate her loyalty.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Emily’s pregnant stomach.

Then she smiled.

Minutes later, the orchestra stopped playing.

Preston stood on the ballroom stage and spoke about tradition, trust, and the importance of knowing one’s place within a family.

Emily stood beside the stage.

Then Vanessa entered carrying a polished brass basin.

A servant placed a velvet chair in the center of the ballroom.

At first, guests laughed uncertainly, assuming it was part of a performance.

Vanessa sat down and removed one shoe.

Preston raised his glass.

“In old families, humility was considered a virtue. Emily has recently forgotten the value of serving something greater than herself.”

Emily looked at the basin.

The cruelty was more public than she expected.

Preston wanted to humiliate her, force her to obey, and show the investors that she remained under his control.

Martha stepped forward.

Emily stopped her with a glance.

This was the moment they had prepared for.

Preston extended his hand toward the basin.

“Show everyone that the Hartwell family still stands with Vance Global.”

Emily looked around the ballroom.

Every face waited.

Then she slowly walked forward.

She knelt beside the basin.

Preston smiled.

May you like

He did not understand that she was not surrendering.

She was giving him enough rope to pull down everything he had built.
