Chapter 14 - THE ARCHIVE UNDER PIER NINE
Investigators declared the warehouse fire deliberate.
The security system had been disabled minutes before the flames began. Whoever entered the building knew exactly where the files were stored.
Claire moved the surviving documents to an independent forensic team.
Among the damaged records was a map showing an underground storage chamber beneath Pier Nine.
The chamber had once been used to protect shipping documents during storms. Its entrance was hidden beneath a rusted loading platform.
Claire, Mara and two investigators entered after midnight.
Inside they discovered dozens of sealed archive boxes.
The records told a story that began long before Claire married Damian.
Victor Hale, Arthur Vale and Damian’s mother, Lydia Kessler, had created Aster Vale Holdings eighteen years earlier. They used it to purchase land before Rowan Meridian announced major developments.
The group secretly profited whenever the company expanded.
Claire’s father had discovered part of the scheme.
Instead of exposing them, he had tried to recover the properties quietly, fearing that a public scandal would destroy thousands of jobs.
His silence had given the conspirators time to grow stronger.
One file contained a handwritten note from him.
Claire,
I believed I could contain this without burdening you. That decision was pride disguised as protection.
Trust evidence, not family names.
At the bottom of the box was a list of payments made to executives, lawyers and government consultants.
Arthur Vale’s name appeared seventeen times.
As Claire finished reading, footsteps sounded above them.
The loading platform moved.
Someone was closing the entrance.
Mara ran toward the stairs, but the steel door slammed shut.
The lights went out.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
Arthur Vale was calling.
“Do not give the files to the police,” he said.
“Why?”
“Because Victor Hale does not want the company.”
