Chapter 7 - The First Domino

|

Before Celeste could even pack her designer suitcases, the phone on Adrian’s desk began to ring.

It didn't just ring once. The digital phone line lit up with five incoming calls simultaneously.

Adrian grabbed the receiver with a trembling hand. "Cross, speaking."

"Adrian!" shouted Marcus Vance, his chief chief financial officer, over the speakerphone. "Where the hell are you?! All our corporate accounts just got frozen!"

Adrian’s stomach plunged into ice water. "What do you mean frozen?!"

"Vance Commercial Bank just issued an immediate recall on our twenty-five million dollar credit facility!" Marcus yelled frantically. "They gave us two hours to settle the entire balance or they freeze all our equipment assets!"

"They can't do that!" Adrian screamed into the receiver. "We have a thirty-day grace period under our loan terms!"

"Not under Clause 14-B!" Marcus cried back. "The loan agreement states that if the principal shareholder commits an act of moral turpitude or marital fraud against a member of the Vance family, the debt defaults instantly!"

Adrian felt a cold sweat break out across his back. He remembered signing that loan agreement four years ago. He had barely read the fine print because he was so desperate for capital.

"Marcus... call our secondary lenders at First Federal!" Adrian ordered, his voice shaking.

"I already called them!" Marcus said, sounding close to tears. "They won't pick up the phone! Word is spreading through the market like wildfire! Everyone knows Evelyn Vance is back on the board, and everyone knows you locked her in a room!"

Before Adrian could reply, his personal cell phone buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown encrypted number.

He looked down at the screen.

It was a sixteen-second video file.

Adrian clicked play with a thumb that trembled violently.

The video was from the mantel clock inside his own study. It showed Celeste sliding her diamond ring into her handbag on Friday morning before walking into the foyer to put on her fake crying performance.

Underneath the video was a single sentence of text from my personal legal team:

TRUTH DOES NOT ASK FOR PROOF, ADRIAN. IT WAITS. SEE YOU IN COURT.

Adrian dropped his phone onto the desk. The glass screen shattered against the hard wood, but the text message remained visible through the cracks.

The destruction of Cross Construction had begun.
