Chapter 2 - Inside the Shadow

|

The double doors of the heavy mahogany study slammed shut behind me. The lock clicked into place with a sharp, metallic sound that echoed through the quiet room.

Outside, I heard Celeste’s voice whining softly. "Adrian, darling... do you think she’ll break? What if she hides it inside the furniture?"

"She won't," Adrian replied coldly. "She has nowhere to go. Her father is dead, her family estate was liquidated years ago, and she doesn't have a single dollar without my signature. By Monday morning, she’ll be on her knees begging for forgiveness."

Their footsteps faded down the long marble corridor toward the master wing.

I stood alone in the dimly lit study.

The air smelled of old leather, cedar wood, and Adrian's expensive scotch. To Adrian, this room was a punishment cell—a place to break my spirit and force me into submission.

To me, it was the only room in the house equipped with an unmonitored hardline connection.

I walked calmly across the Persian rug to the massive oak bookcase against the far wall. I reached behind the third row of leather-bound encyclopedias and pressed a small, spring-loaded brass pin.

With a soft click, the lower wooden panel slid open to reveal a custom, black-cased satellite terminal—a gift from my father on the day I married Adrian.

I opened the sleek laptop and pressed the biometric scanner. The screen glowed to life instantly, illuminating my face in cool blue light.

A high-priority communication window popped up on the display.

SYSTEM LOGIN: EVELYN VANCE SINCLAIR.

STATUS: ACTIVE.

A secure voice connection initiated automatically, clicking through three encrypted proxies before a deep, familiar voice answered in my ear.

"Ma'am," said Dominic, the chief security director of Vance International. "We have been monitoring your frequency. Has the experiment concluded?"

"It ended ten minutes ago, Dominic," I said calmly, looking at my bare left ring finger. "Adrian locked me in the study. He accused me of stealing a glass ring from his mistress."

Dominic let out a low, cold laugh over the line. "A thirty-million-dollar construction executive accusing the sole heiress of a hundred-billion-dollar global syndicate of petty theft. The ignorance of that man never ceases to amaze me."

"Is the private jet prepped at the hangar?" I asked.

"The Gulfstream is fueled and standing by at Executive Gate 4," Dominic reported. "Your legal team has finalized the paperwork. The moment you step aboard, the Vance Liquidation Protocol will execute against Cross Construction."

I looked out the high stained-glass window at the rain beginning to streak down the glass.

"Good," I said softly. "Let him play master of the house for three days. On the third morning, give him my regards."
