Chapter 16 - The Unbroken Queen

Back inside the penthouse suite of Vance Tower, the evening was quiet and warm.
A fire crackled softly in the marble hearth. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, snow fell gently over Central Park, dusting the trees in pure white.
I sat in an velvet armchair, reading a leather-bound book on modern architecture, sipping a glass of rare red wine.
Marcus Sterling sat in the armchair opposite me, reviewing a set of blueprints for our joint international spaceport project.
"You look peaceful tonight, Evelyn," Marcus said softly, setting his tablet down on the coffee table.
I set my wine glass down and looked over at him.
"I am peaceful, Marcus," I replied with a warm, genuine smile. "For the first time in my life, every decision I make is entirely my own."
Marcus looked at me with deep, unshakeable respect. "You survived a storm that would have broken most people."
"I didn't survive the storm, Marcus," I corrected him gently, looking at the snow falling softly outside. "I was the storm."
Dominic stepped silently into the room, bowing slightly.
"Ms. Vance," Dominic said, holding out a silver tray containing an encrypted black satellite phone. "An urgent call on line four."
I raised an eyebrow. "Who is calling at this hour?"
"It is the Ministry of Global Infrastructure in Geneva," Dominic reported, his voice dropping into a serious, guarded tone. "They have just uncovered an unlisted, fifty-billion-dollar off-shore account registered under your late father's secret trust."
Marcus leaned forward, his interest piqued. "A secret trust?"
I picked up the black phone, my mind instantly shifting back into the high-stakes chess game of international finance.

"Connect line four, Dominic," I commanded smoothly.
"Yes, Chairwoman."
