Chapter 5 - Struck Speechless

|

The silver tray slipped from Mrs. Vale's fingers, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a deafening rattle.

Adrian stared at the housekeeper as if she had suddenly spoken in an alien language.

"What... what did you just say?" Adrian managed to choke out, his voice stripped of all its former arrogance.

Mrs. Vale held out the digital tablet, her hand trembling. "Look at the business news, Mr. Cross. It's on every financial network in the world."

Adrian snatched the tablet from her hands. Celeste crowded close behind his shoulder, her eyes wide with frantic confusion.

On the high-definition screen, a live broadcast from Wall Street was playing.

The headline running across the bottom of the screen read in bold red letters:

BREAKING NEWS: EVELYN VANCE SINCLAIR REASSUMES CONTROL OF VANCE INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS AFTER FOUR-YEAR ABSENCE.

Underneath the headline was a crystal-clear, high-resolution photograph of me.

I was stepping out of a sleek black limousine in front of the Vance Tower in Manhattan, surrounded by a wall of private security guards and shouting journalists. I was wearing a black custom suit, a ten-carat diamond brooch on my lapel, and an expression of cold, unyielding power.

The news anchor’s voice echoed clearly through the quiet study:

"...The re-emergence of Evelyn Vance Sinclair has sent shockwaves through the global markets this morning. Following the quiet passing of her father, the heiress had retreated from public life. But as of 6:00 AM Eastern Time, Ms. Vance has officially reclaimed her seat as Executive Chairwoman of Vance Global—a conglomerate valued at over one hundred and twenty billion dollars..."

Adrian’s breath hitched in his chest. His fingers pressed so hard against the glass of the tablet that his knuckles turned white.

"Vance..." Adrian whispered, his jaw dropping open. "Vance Global? Her maiden name was Vance..."

"Adrian," Celeste squeaked, her voice turning high and hysterical. "This is a mistake! It’s a prank! She was broke! You told me her family was bankrupt!"

"They weren't bankrupt," Mrs. Vale said softly from the doorway, her voice filled with a mixture of awe and pity. "Mrs. Cross's father built half the sky-scrapers in Chicago. She married you under a trust clause to see if you loved her for her person... or her money."

Adrian felt the floor beneath his feet tilt.

He remembered the day he met me. He remembered how easily I had agreed to sign a prenuptial agreement that gave me nothing from his company. He had thought I was desperate. He had thought he was saving me.

In reality, he had been a bug standing under the foot of a giant.

"My god," Adrian breathed, his face turning as gray as ashes. "What have I done?"
