Chapter 15 - The Billboard in Times Square

|

One year after the night I was locked in the study, New York City was covered in a fresh layer of winter snow.

In Times Square, massive digital billboards illuminated the crowded streets in brilliant colors.

On the largest billboard of all—an eighty-foot screen towering over 42nd Street—was a striking image of me. I was featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine as PERSON OF THE YEAR: THE WOMAN WHO REBUILT AN EMPIRE.

Down on the crowded sidewalk below, a man in a worn, faded winter coat stood among the tourists, staring up at the screen.

It was Adrian.

He had taken a bus into the city for a low-paying construction inspection job. His hands were calloused, his boots were scuffed, and his face was aged by ten years of stress and regret.

He stood frozen in the freezing wind, staring up at my face glowing high above the city.

He remembered the cream dress. He remembered the quiet way I used to sit at his dinner table, never complaining, never demanding, simply watching him with those calm, perceptive eyes.

He pulled his hands into his coat pockets, feeling the cold air bite through the thin fabric.

A young couple walked past him, pointing up at the billboard.

"Look at her," the young woman said to her partner in awe. "She’s incredible. She lost everything and took it all back tenfold."

"Yeah," her partner replied, pulling her close against the cold. "Some people are just born queens."

Adrian closed his eyes as a tear froze against his cheek.

He didn't scream. He didn't cry out. He simply pulled his hood up over his head, turned his back on the glowing screen, and disappeared into the anonymous crowd of the city.
