Chapter 20 - The Throne and the Key

The room fell into a heavy, breathless silence.
Vincenzo took the ring from the box, holding it between his fingers as he looked down into Beatrice’s eyes.
“Evelyn wanted the crown, but she didn't care about the man wearing it,” Vincenzo said, his voice deep, gravelly, and full of emotion. “You saved my life because of who I was, not what I owned.”
He reached out, taking her right hand in his.
“I’m not offering you a quiet life, Beatrice,” Vincenzo warned softly. “My world is full of shadows, wars, and men who want to take what we build. But I will never ask you to sit in the dark again.”
He placed the ring on the table beside the brass key she had received weeks ago.
“The key gives you control of my assets,” Vincenzo said, his eyes burning with intense question. “You can take it, walk away tomorrow, and live in safety anywhere in the world with enough wealth for three lifetimes.”
He stepped closer, his thumb gently brushing against her cheek.
“Or you can take the ring... and rule this empire beside me.”

Beatrice looked down at the brass key, then up at the black diamond ring resting on the mahogany desk.
Outside the window, a heavy storm began to roll over the dark waters of Lake Michigan, thunder rumbling softly in the distance as the open question hung between them, waiting for her answer.
