Beatrice looked up, her heart skipping a beat. “Me, sir?”

“Drop the 'sir,' Beatrice,” Vincenzo said quietly. “You saved my life. You proved more loyal than my fiancée, my board members, and half my security detail.”

He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a key—a solid brass key stamped with the crest of the Costa family. He laid it on the counter between them.

“This opens the private suite on the fourth floor,” Vincenzo explained. “Starting tomorrow, you are no longer part of the house staff.”

Beatrice stared at the key. “I don't understand.”

You survived six years in this house by observing people who thought you were invisible. I need someone beside me who sees the world clearly.”

Beatrice looked from the key to his dark, handsome face.

“People will talk, Vincenzo,” she whispered, using his name for the first time in six years. “They’ll say a maid dragged her way into your inner circle.”

“Let them talk,” Vincenzo said, his hand closing over hers, pressing the brass key into her palm. “In Chicago, people only talk until I tell them to be quiet. What matters is whether you accept.”
