Their partnership thrived, blurring the lines between business, family, and passion. For six months, the Beluchcci empire experienced an era of unprecedented peace and profitability.
But power in the underworld is a vacuum, and someone always seeks to fill it.
It was late Friday evening. Norah was alone in the sub-basement archive, organizing the final transfers of the old blackmail files into a secure, encrypted digital server. The physical ledger was going to be burned. It was too dangerous to keep.
She opened the massive vault door, the biometric scanner flashing green. She reached in and pulled the heavy black ledger from its velvet pedestal.
As she lifted it, a small, hidden compartment in the pedestal clicked open.
Norah froze. She hadn't seen this before. She carefully set the ledger down and looked inside the hidden compartment. Resting on a bed of silk was an old, rusted iron key and a sealed envelope bearing the wax seal of the United States Department of Defense.
Her heart began to race. She broke the wax seal and pulled out the single sheet of paper.
It was a letter written by her grandfather, Lorenzo Beluchcci.
If you are reading this, the vault has been opened by the true heir. The ledger was merely a distraction for the local families. This key opens Vault 4 at the Swiss National Bank in Geneva. Inside is the truth about the syndicate’s ties to the federal government. Do not trust the politicians. Do not trust the agencies. And above all, do not trust the man who sits beside you on the throne. They are all compromised.
Norah stared at the letter, her blood running ice cold.
Behind her, the heavy archive door slowly swung shut.
The soft click of the magnetic lock echoing in the silent room.
She turned around. Standing in the shadows, watching her with an unreadable expression, was Elias. He held a suppressed pistol in his hand.

"I'm sorry, Miss Witman," Elias said softly. "But Washington says that key belongs to them."
Norah looked at the gun, then at the iron key in her hand, realizing the true war had only just begun.
