Chapter 2 - The Packing

|

Norah’s apartment in Brooklyn was small, efficient, and smelled of lavender and old paper. Usually, it was her sanctuary. Tonight, it felt like a trap.

She threw a canvas duffel bag onto her bed and began shoving clothes into it. Jeans, sweaters, thick socks. She didn’t know where she was going, only that she had to be anywhere but New York. Working for the Beluchcci Group meant ignoring certain realities. It meant pretending the men who visited Damian’s office with broken knuckles were just aggressive investors. It meant not asking why millions of dollars moved through shell companies in the Caymans.

She had survived by being invisible. By being the bookish secretary who never asked questions. Opening that safe had shattered her invisibility.

She grabbed her lockbox from under the bed, extracting her passport, a stack of emergency cash, and her adoption papers. She paused, looking at the faded yellow document. Jane Doe. Found abandoned at St. Jude’s Orphanage, 1999. She had never known her parents. She had never cared to.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Caller ID: Damian Beluchcci.

Norah stared at the glowing screen. It buzzed again. Then a third time. She picked it up, her thumb hovering over the reject button, before finally pressing accept.

"I resigned, Mr. Beluchcci," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"You can’t run from this, Norah," Damian’s voice was dangerously calm, echoing through the speaker. "The moment you put your hand on that glass, your life as you knew it ended."

"You don't own me."

"I am trying to keep you breathing," Damian replied. "If my family’s enemies find out a civilian can open the clan’s vault, they won’t ask for your resignation. They will take your hand. And they won't care if the rest of you is attached to it."

A heavy knock rattled her front door.

Norah froze. "Did you send someone?"

May you like

"Do not open the door," Damian ordered, the calm vanishing from his voice. "Marco is five minutes away. Who is at your door, Norah?"

"I don't know," she whispered, backing away from the entrance.
