Chapter 10 - The Cabin

|

The drive took four hours. By the time they reached the hidden cabin, deep in the dense pine forests of upstate New York, the sun was beginning to bleed over the horizon.

The cabin was rustic but secure, built with heavy logs and reinforced steel shutters. Damian unlocked the door, flipping a switch that activated a silent, off-grid generator.

As the lights flickered on, Norah turned to look at Damian and gasped. His black shirt was soaked in blood along his left side.

"You're shot!" she cried, rushing toward him.

"It's just a graze," Damian grunted, leaning heavily against the wooden table. His face was pale, glistening with sweat. "Ricochet. Caught me in the ribs when we breached the garage."

"Sit down," Norah ordered, the efficient, authoritative secretary returning. "Where is the first aid kit?"

Damian pointed to a cabinet near the fireplace. Norah retrieved the kit, unbuttoning his blood-soaked shirt with trembling fingers. The wound was deep, a nasty gouge along his ribcage, but the bullet hadn't lodged inside.

She cleaned the wound with alcohol. Damian hissed in pain, his abdominal muscles clenching, but he didn't pull away.

"You're very bossy for a secretary," he muttered, trying to distract himself from the burning pain.

"I manage your schedule, Mr. Beluchcci. Bossing you around is literally my job description," she replied, taping a thick gauze pad over the wound.

Their faces were inches apart. In the quiet intimacy of the cabin, the adrenaline fading, Norah finally looked at him not as her intimidating boss, but as a man. A man who had just risked his life to protect hers.

Damian’s dark eyes searched hers, the tension between them thick and suffocating. He slowly raised a hand, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His thumb lingered on her cheek.

"Thank you, Norah," he whispered.

Norah’s breath hitched. She stepped back, breaking the spell. "You need rest. We have a lot of planning to do."
