Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 - SILENT INTRUSION

|

"Stay behind me!" Marcus shouted, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his waistband.

"No," Elena snapped, pulling a concealed stun baton from her jacket. "Get to the nursery! Now!"

They sprinted through the darkened, red-lit hallways as rain lashed against the glass outside. The sound of shattered French doors echoed from the ground floor, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots on marble.

Multiple armed men in black tactical gear had breached the lower level.

Marcus fired two shots down the grand staircase, forcing two intruders to dive behind the stone pillars. "Go, Elena! Take the hidden servants' stairs!"

Elena didn't argue. She bolted down the narrow, concealed hallway behind the tapestries, bursting into the nursery.

The baby was crying wildly, frightened by the thunder and the gunshots.

Elena scooped the infant into her arms, wrapping him tightly in a thick leather carrier strapped to her chest. She grabbed Sarah's letter from the drawer and turned toward the exit.

The nursery door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.

A tall intruder in dark tactical gear stepped into the room, a silenced pistol raised directly at Elena's head.

He pulled off his night-vision visor.

Elena froze.

It wasn't a hired mercenary.

It was Victoria. Wearing dark tactical clothes, her eyes wild with murderous insanity, a bloody bandage wrapped around her shoulder from her earlier arrest.

"Hello, maid," Victoria whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Did you really think a little jail cell could hold me?"
