Elena carried the wrapped infant upstairs to the master nursery. Her knees were sore, and her shoulder throbbed with every step, but her grip on the child remained gentle and secure.
She laid the baby down in his carved crib, checking his temperature and breathing. He was sleeping deeply now, his tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.
As Elena adjusted his blanket, her fingers caught on a small metallic latch hidden beneath the crib’s wooden mattress frame.
She paused. Frowning, she pulled the latch. A hidden compartment slid open silently.
Inside lay a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.
Elena hesitated. "This shouldn't be here..."
Curiosity overcame her. She pulled the envelope out and broke the seal. Inside was a handwritten letter and a stack of financial documents dated two years ago.
The signature at the bottom of the letter made Elena’s heart skip a beat: Sarah Sterling—Marcus’s late wife, who had died in a mysterious car crash shortly after the baby was born.
Elena read the first line of the letter, her eyes widening in horror:
If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and my sister Victoria has moved into the house. Do not trust her. She did not work alone. She is employed by Vance Global—the company trying to buy Marcus's estate. They want my son dead so Marcus has no heir to leave the land to.
Elena’s blood ran cold.
Victoria wasn't just a bitter, jealous woman acting on impulse. She was part of a larger, deadly conspiracy targeting Marcus and his child.
