Chapter 6 - Blood on the Silk

|

The transition from invisible assistant to mafia royalty was exhausting.

Nadia spent her days in the penthouse being educated by Dante’s advisors on syndicate history, protocol, and self-defense. She learned how to strip a Glock in under thirty seconds, though she prayed she would never need to use one.

On the fifth night, Dante hosted a formal dinner for his inner circle at a private restaurant.

Nadia wore a sleek, backless red gown. She excused herself to the powder room halfway through the meal, needing a moment to breathe away from the heavy, assessing stares of the mobsters.

She turned on the gold faucet, splashing cold water on her wrists.

The bathroom door clicked shut. The heavy deadbolt slid into place.

Nadia looked up into the mirror. Standing behind her was Gemma Rizzo.

Gemma looked deranged. Her mascara was smeared, and she was breathing heavily, clutching a small, pearl-handled switchblade.

“You stole my crown,” Gemma hissed, stepping forward.

“Gemma, put the knife down,” Nadia said, turning around slowly, keeping her hands visible.

“I starved for that dress!” Gemma screamed, lunging forward with a vicious slash.

Nadia didn't freeze. The self-defense training flared in her mind. She sidestepped the blade, grabbed Gemma’s wrist, and twisted hard. Gemma shrieked, dropping the knife as it clattered against the marble tiles.

Nadia shoved the socialite against the sink, pinning her arm behind her back.

The bathroom door suddenly shattered inward. Dante stood in the doorway, his gun drawn, his face a mask of absolute murder.

He saw Nadia holding Gemma against the counter, perfectly unharmed.

Dante holstered his weapon, walking slowly into the room. He looked at Gemma with eyes so cold they burned.

“Tell your father,” Dante whispered, “that if anyone bearing the Rizzo name comes within fifty feet of my bride again, I will burn his empire to ash.”
