Chapter 14 - The Traitor Within

|

With the commission fully backing the impending war, the estate became a fortress of preparation.

But one detail still bothered Nadia. How had Rizzo’s men bypassed the outer security perimeter during the lobby ambush?

She reviewed the security footage with Leo in the war room.

“Look at the service entrance,” Nadia pointed at the screen. “The magnetic locks were disabled three minutes before the shooting started. Someone inside triggered an override.”

Leo typed rapidly, pulling up the access logs. “The override code belonged to the seamstress wing.”

Nadia’s heart sank. “Marta.”

They found the old seamstress packing a small suitcase in her quarters. When she saw Nadia and Dante standing in the doorway, she collapsed to her knees, weeping hysterically.

“I had no choice!” Marta sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “Rizzo’s men took my grandson. They said they would kill him if I didn't open the doors. I am so sorry, Nadia. I’m so sorry.”

Dante drew his weapon, his eyes cold and dead. Treason was punished by a bullet, regardless of the excuse.

“Dante, no,” Nadia said, stepping in front of his gun.

“She sold our lives, Nadia,” Dante growled. “She let assassins into our home.”

“She protected her blood,” Nadia countered firmly, staring him down. “Just as we are protecting ours. She isn't a soldier. She’s a terrified grandmother.”

Nadia turned to Marta. “Pack your things. Dante’s men will secure your grandson and put you both on a plane to Italy tonight. You are banished from this city forever. If you ever return, I will not stop him from pulling the trigger.”

Marta kissed the hem of Nadia’s skirt, weeping in gratitude.

Dante holstered his weapon, looking at Nadia with profound admiration. She was ruling with mercy, a trait this family had lacked for decades.
