Chapter 5 - The First Test

The syndicate’s private tailor was located in a heavily guarded boutique in the diamond district.

Nadia stepped out of the armored SUV, flanked by six armed men. The street was cordoned off, but paparazzi pressed against the barricades, their camera flashes blinding in the midday sun.

Dante placed his hand firmly on the small of her back, guiding her inside.

Waiting in the boutique lobby were three elderly men. The capos of the Leone commission. They were the traditionalists, the men who held the true power behind the throne.

“Dante,” the oldest capo, a man named Silvio, rasped. He leaned on a silver cane, his rheumy eyes fixing on Nadia. “This is the girl who fits the silk?”

“She is,” Dante said.

Silvio circled Nadia slowly. “She looks soft. A secretary. The Rizzo girl had fire. A boss needs a queen who can look a killer in the eye without weeping.”

Nadia’s heart hammered against her ribs. She remembered what Dante had said about survival. She drew a slow breath, forcing her spine straight.

“I may have been a secretary, Silvio,” Nadia spoke up, her voice ringing clearly in the quiet room.

The capos froze. Women rarely spoke out of turn in these meetings.

“But as an assistant,” Nadia continued, looking directly into Silvio’s eyes, “I was the one who processed the laundering ledgers for your casino in Atlantic City. I know exactly how much you skimmed off the top last quarter before presenting the tribute to Dante.”

The room went dead silent. Silvio’s face drained of color.

Nadia didn't blink. “I do not need fire to protect this family. I just need to know where the bodies are buried.”

Dante let out a low, dark chuckle that echoed off the marble walls.

“Gentlemen,” Dante smiled. “Meet your new queen.”
