Chapter 20 - The Unseen Threat

A week later, the dust had finally settled. We were living in Luca’s ultra-secure penthouse in the heart of downtown Chicago. The Romano syndicate had been completely absorbed, and Luca was now the undisputed king of the city’s underworld.
My leg was completely healed, and my heart was finally at peace. I stood on the balcony of the penthouse, looking out over the glittering city lights, wrapped in one of Luca’s large, warm dress shirts.
Luca walked out onto the balcony, wrapping his strong arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"The contractors are starting the rebuild on the estate tomorrow," he murmured, kissing my neck. "We can design it however you want. It's your home now."
I smiled, leaning back into his solid chest. Everything felt perfect. Too perfect.

The message contained a single, grainy photograph. It was a picture of my father—a man who had supposedly died in a car accident when I was a child. He was standing next to a younger Don Romano, shaking hands.
Beneath the photo was a text message.
"Did you really think you were just a random maid, Mia? Ask your precious Luca what his father did to yours. See you soon. — Isabella."
My blood turned entirely to ice. The phone slipped from my trembling fingers, clattering onto the glass table.
Luca noticed my sudden rigidity. "Mia? What's wrong?"

I turned around slowly, looking into the dark, protective eyes of the man I loved. The man who had saved me. The man who was suddenly surrounded by a new, terrifying shadow of secrets.
"Luca," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Who was my father?"
