Chapter 19 - The Ashes of the Estate

I sat in the cold steel vault for what felt like an eternity. The security monitors flickered and died one by one as the cameras upstairs were destroyed in the crossfire. The muffled sounds of explosions and gunfire eventually faded into a heavy, agonizing silence.
I huddled in the corner, clutching the pistol to my chest, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years. If Luca didn't come back, I promised myself I would save the last bullet.
Hours passed. The air in the bunker grew stale.
Suddenly, the heavy metallic clack of the keypad echoed in the small space.
I raised the trembling pistol, aiming it directly at the steel door. If it was a Romano soldier, I was ready to fight.
The door hissed open, revealing the smoke-filled basement corridor.
A figure stood in the doorway, swaying slightly.
It was Luca.
His expensive suit was shredded. He was bleeding from a gunshot wound in his shoulder, and a deep cut across his cheek mirrored the brutality of the night. But he was alive. His dark eyes found me in the dim light, and a massive wave of relief washed over his exhausted face.
I dropped the gun and sprinted across the room, throwing myself into his arms. He caught me, groaning slightly from the pain, but holding me as tightly as his wounded body allowed.

"It's over," he whispered hoarsely into my hair, his blood staining my beautiful green dress. "Don Romano is dead. The remaining capos surrendered. The city is ours."
We walked out of the bunker together. The beautiful Moretti estate was ruined, reduced to bullet-riddled walls and smoldering ashes. But as I held onto the man who had fought a war for me, I realized that the house didn't matter. We had survived. The monster had become my savior.
