Chapter 15 - The Bathroom Ambush

The gala was a suffocating game of smiles and veiled threats. I stood by Luca’s side for hours, playing the perfect companion, until the sheer exhaustion of the masquerade forced me to seek a moment of quiet.
"I just need to use the powder room," I whispered to Luca.
He frowned, his protective instincts flaring. "I'll have my guards wait outside the door."

"Did you really think a fancy green dress makes you one of us?" Isabella sneered, walking slowly toward me. "You are trash, Mia. You will always be the girl scrubbing floors on her knees."
"And you are the girl who lost her fiancé to the help," I retorted, surprising myself with the venom in my own voice.
Isabella’s eyes flashed with blind rage. She didn't bother with insults anymore. She lunged at me, her manicured claws aiming directly for my face.

We crashed against the marble counter. I managed to block her hands, grabbing her wrists, but she was fueled by pure, psychotic jealousy. She shoved me backward, trying to pin me against the mirrors. I wasn't the scared maid from the pantry anymore. I twisted my body, using her momentum against her, and shoved her hard into the plush velvet sofa in the center of the room.
Isabella screamed as she fell.
