Chapter 18 - The Safe Room

|

The estate was a chaotic nightmare of smoke, screaming men, and relentless gunfire. Luca dragged me through the secret servant corridors, his handgun drawn, neutralizing two Romano hitmen who breached the kitchen with lethal, terrifying precision.

We reached the sub-basement. Hidden behind a false wine rack was the entrance to the estate's panic room—a reinforced steel vault designed to withstand a siege.

Luca punched a code into the keypad. The heavy steel door hissed open.

He pushed me inside the small, brightly lit bunker. It was stocked with water, medical supplies, and monitors displaying the security feeds of the burning mansion above.

"Stay in here," Luca commanded, his face covered in soot and blood that wasn't his. He handed me a loaded pistol. "Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me."

"Luca, no!" I cried, grabbing his blood-stained shirt. "You can't go back out there. They have too many men! Stay in here with me!"

"If I stay in here, they will eventually breach the door," Luca said, his voice deadly calm. "I have to kill Don Romano. It is the only way this ends. I have to protect you."

Tears streamed down my face. I realized in that terrifying moment that the cold mafia boss had become the center of my entire world.

"Please don't leave me," I sobbed.

Luca dropped his gun. He grabbed my face with both hands and kissed me with a desperate, crushing intensity. It was a kiss that tasted of gunpowder, fear, and absolute, undeniable love.

"I will come back for you," he promised fiercely, pressing his forehead against mine. "I swear on my life, Mia. I will come back."

He stepped out of the vault. The heavy steel door slammed shut between us, the electronic locks engaging with a terrifying finality. I was completely alone in the dark.
