Chapter 4 - The Evidence Folder

|
Judge Harrison looked down at the guardianship petition again, but something in his posture had changed entirely. He wasn't looking at a helpless widow anymore; he was looking at a superior officer.
Then, his eyes caught the thick, red-sealed folder I had deliberately placed in the dead center of my table.
“Admiral,” Judge Harrison said carefully, the respect evident in his tone, “what exactly have you brought into my courtroom today?”
I rested both hands firmly on the brass handle of my cane and turned to look directly into my son’s terrified eyes.
“Evidence, Your Honor.”
David stopped breathing. Victoria’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer panic.
When the bailiff handed the judge my folder and he broke the seal to view the first document, his reaction was instantaneous. He didn't ask questions; he reached straight for the heavy black phone beside his bench.
“Madam Clerk,” Judge Harrison said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. “Please ask the fraud investigators from the court’s financial abuse office to remain available this afternoon. Furthermore, contact the county recorder on the emergency property matter filed under this case number. I want absolutely nothing transferred, sold, refinanced, or otherwise encumbered until this hearing is concluded. Freeze everything.”
Cameron Hayes leaped up.
“Your Honor, if I may interject—”
“You may sit down and remain silent for the moment, Mr. Hayes,” the judge barked, cutting him off with a lethal glare.
Cameron sat down so fast he nearly missed his chair.
I heard Victoria whisper frantically, “David, what is going on? What is in that folder?”
David couldn’t answer. His hands were shaking on the table.
Judge Harrison turned a page. “Admiral Sterling, this bank statement shows an unauthorized withdrawal of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from an account in your sole name.”
“Yes, Your Honor,” I said clearly.
“Dated precisely two months ago?”
“Yes.”
“And the funds were wired directly to an offshore account belonging to Beacon Point Development Group?”
May you like
“That is correct.”
Judge Harrison turned his piercing gaze toward Cameron. “Counselor, is your client associated with this Beacon Point company?”
