Chapter 17 - Victoria's Ultimatum

David jumped up from the stool, wiping his face rapidly. “Victoria, what are you doing here? You aren't supposed to be here.”
“I’m here to stop my husband from signing a suicide pact with his psychotic mother!” she spat, turning her venomous glare onto me.
She slammed a thick folder onto the kitchen island. “I just left my own lawyer’s office, David. If you confess to wire fraud and take the fall for this, I am filing for divorce today. I will take full custody of the kids, and I will testify that you acted entirely alone. I will tell the feds you manipulated Evan into taking those loans.”
David looked horrified. “Victoria, Evan forged the collateral documents! He's the one who brought the sharks in!”
“Prove it!” she challenged, leaning directly into his face. “Evan destroyed all the physical records from Beacon Point last night. There is no proof tying him to the illegal loans. It’s your word against his, and you are the one who just got caught forging your mother’s signature in a court of law. Who do you think the judge is going to believe?”
I stood silently, watching the vipers eat each other.
“You’re blackmailing me,” David whispered, the reality of his toxic marriage finally crashing down on him.
“I am surviving,” Victoria sneered. She turned to me, her eyes flashing with triumph. “And you, Admiral. You might have won the battle in court, but you have nothing. If you press charges, your son goes to federal prison for twenty years. Your grandchildren grow up without a father, hating you forever. You lose your entire family. So, drop the charges, let us sell the house, and we walk away quietly. Or send your son to rot in a cell.”

She smiled that same predatory smile from three weeks ago. She thought she had checkmated me.
But Victoria didn't know about the blue ledger.
