Chapter 13 - The Midnight List

|
I did not sleep that night. Every room in my massive house contained a memory, and every memory now seemed tainted, hiding a locked door I had never noticed.
At 3:00 AM, I was sitting at the kitchen island, a pot of black coffee brewing. I pulled out a legal pad and a pen. It was an old military habit. When the emotion became too large to carry, I forced it into columns. I needed tactical clarity.
Knowns:
Arthur gave David $80,000 years ago to cover a hidden debt.
David believed the estate was rightfully his based on a twisted conversation with his father.
David stole $120,000 from me and forged a loan to funnel into a failing company called Beacon Point.
The land my house sits on is tied to an entity called Harbor Point.
Unknowns:
Where is the blue ledger?
Why did Arthur have a secret financial stake in David's company?
What is the true connection between Beacon Point and Harbor Point?
Assumed:
That David's betrayal was born entirely out of greed.
I stared at that final line. The evidence supported it. But evidence and motive are not identical. In the Navy, the fastest way to get your fleet sunk was assuming you knew why the enemy was attacking before you figured out how. I needed to interrogate the prisoner. I needed David.
At 8:00 AM, I called Sarah.
“I want the Harbor Point property records pulled immediately,” I ordered. “And I want you to call Cameron Hayes. Tell him David is coming to my house at noon today. Alone.”

“Eleanor, that’s highly irregular. You have a restraining order.”
“I am temporarily lifting it for a two-hour window. If he doesn't show up, I am pressing federal wire fraud charges at 1:00 PM. Make the call.”
