Chapter 10 - The Hidden Box

|

Evan looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a tank. He was a broad-shouldered, sunburned man who spent more time drinking on boats than managing his supposed real estate business.

“Mrs. Sterling! I—I was just packing my things, I swear,” he stammered, frantically trying to hide a stack of financial documents behind his back.

“Drop the papers, Evan. Now.”

He dropped them instantly.

“David told me to look for something,” Evan confessed, his voice cracking. “He said Mr. Sterling kept records about the money he put into Beacon Point years ago. He said there was an old blue ledger that proved Arthur was a silent partner in the company.”

Sarah stepped forward, her lawyer instincts flaring. “David testified under oath today that he didn't know if his father had helped finance the company.”

Evan groaned, rubbing his face. “Well, he lied to you. He told me Arthur bankrolled the whole operation. I was just trying to find the proof before we get sued into oblivion.”

“Did you find this blue ledger?” I asked, my heart pounding at the mention of Arthur keeping secrets.

“No. But I found this.”

Evan pointed a trembling finger toward Arthur’s heavy oak desk. Sitting in the center of the leather blotter was a small, ornate wooden box. I recognized it immediately. Arthur had brought it back from a trip to Morocco decades ago. I had always assumed it held his old war medals or childhood photos.

I walked over and opened the heavy brass latch.

Inside, beneath a layer of old family polaroids, were six sealed envelopes. They were tied together with a faded piece of navy-blue ribbon.

My breath caught in my throat.

Each envelope had a name written on it in Arthur’s unmistakable, elegant cursive.

Eleanor.

David.

Victoria.

Evan.

And two more envelopes simply marked: LATER.
