Chapter 6 - The Click of Steel

Detective Elias Thorne did not rush. He stepped out of the sterile hospital shadows with the measured, deliberate pace of a predator that had successfully cornered its prey. His dark trench coat billowed slightly around his ankles, and his eyes, cold and analytical, remained fixed entirely on Richard. The brass padlock lay between them on the linoleum, a heavy, soot-stained monument to a parent’s ultimate betrayal.

"Detective," Richard stammered, the remaining color completely washing out of his face. His carefully constructed facade of the grieving father was fracturing into a million irreparable pieces. "This is a misunderstanding. My daughter has just been through a severely traumatic event. The smoke inhalation... it causes hallucinations. Paranoia. She doesn't know what she's saying or doing."

"The lock doesn't look like a hallucination, Richard," Thorne replied, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that commanded absolute authority. He stopped just inches from the heavy brass object, nudging it gently with the tip of his polished leather shoe. "It looks like physical evidence. Evidence that perfectly aligns with the burn patterns my arson investigators just found on the exterior frame of your daughter’s bedroom door."

Claire let out a high-pitched, hysterical gasp, pressing her hands against her chest as if she couldn't pull enough oxygen into her lungs. "Elias, please! You’ve known us for years! We host the police benevolent charity galas! You cannot possibly entertain the frantic delusions of a traumatized girl over the word of upstanding citizens!"

"Upstanding citizens don't usually smell like gasoline, Claire," Thorne noted dryly, stepping past the padlock.

He didn't pull out a notebook. He didn't ask any follow-up questions. Thorne simply unclipped the heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. The metallic jingle echoed sharply through the quiet hospital corridor, freezing Richard in his tracks.

"Richard and Claire Vance," Thorne announced, his voice carrying the finality of a judge's gavel. "You are both under arrest for the attempted murder of your daughter, Evelyn Vance, and for first-degree arson. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Richard tried to step backward, holding his hands up defensively, but two uniformed officers materialized from the stairwell, moving in with ruthless efficiency. They grabbed Richard's arms, twisting them behind his back. The sharp, heavy click of the steel cuffs securing his wrists sounded like a gunshot.

Evie stood perfectly still in her hospital gown, watching the parents she had loved her entire life being dragged away in chains. She didn't cry. She didn't scream. The fire had burned away her childhood, leaving behind only cold, unyielding ash.
